Fundamental

The terms fundamentalism and fundamentalist began to take on negative connotations after the peak of the fundamentalist high point in the 1920’s.

The famous debate between the Champion of fundamentalism, William Jennings Bryan and the ACLU hired lawyer Clarence Darrow was the turning point of for the fundamentalism of the first decades of the 20th century. Modernism and the ‘science’ (actually theory) of evolution was what was being debate.  The case concerned a state of Tennessee’s law in banning the teaching of evolution in the classroom. Bryan did not have  a modernist scientific point of view and was wade to look like a country hick by the mainstream media.
